Abstract

This article presents the evolution of the ”community development” concept in the United Nations (particularly the UNESCO) documents. ”Community development” is defined as the process that allowes the community to achieve social and economic progress through active self involvement. The community will contribute with various resources and will participate in activities such as assessment, planning or implementing. Involving the community in the process will increase the likelihood of maintaining the obtained results on a long-term basis or the chance to receive ulterior support to similar projects.
