The Bible has been and remains a wellspring for the world literature. In it, writers find literary motifs and themes in abundance, with inexhaustible artistic potential. Lyrical literature has been particularly inspired by the Book of Psalms. From the very beginning of the Romanian literature or „the morning of the poets" as Eugen Simion called it „ The Psalms" have insipired creative attention. Modern poetry, however, has the indisputable merit of rediscovering the philosophical dimensions and the profoundness of the psalms that center on the dialogue between the human being and Divinity. Psalm authors as Tudor Arghezi, Lucian Blaga, Aron Cotruș, Ștefan Augustin Doinaș, A. E. Baconsky, Ana Blandiana catch in their creations the thrill of the metaphysical restlessness generated by the relationship between the human being and God. Ștefan Augustin Doinași psalms raise a series of fundamental interrogations concerning the mystery of the ahere-and-now" existence, but also that of the “heavenly" one. From the one hundredpsalms the poet puts into verse the most profound feelings, the most disturbing questions, the most unsettling ontological experiences. Revolt indignation, fury, perplexity, joy, reverence, repentance and praise give expression to the authentic, the pure and the intense, all of which contour the religious poetry of Ștefan Augustin Doinaș.
