The Origins of Biblical Apocalypticism: An Intertextual Study between the Apocalypses of Joel and Daniel
Keywords:
Daniel, Joel, intertextuality, apocalyptic literatureAbstract
While literary connections between passages from the book of Daniel and literary units from Genesis, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah have been elaborated in scholarly research, the intertextual relationship between Daniel and Joel has been largely, if not completely, overlooked. This study argues that the book of Joel provided the framework for establishing Daniel’s call as a prophet in Babylon, as well as the source for some of the core apocalyptic ideas present in the final form of the book.
