Abstract

This study presents a chronological exposition of the beginning of the translation into the Romanian language of the Holy Scripture. The first Romanian biblical text, which is preserved until today, is Evangheliarul de la Sibiu (the Gospel of Sibiu), published between 1551 and 1553. The Romanian pioneer typographer Coresi, published other parts of the Scripture as Tetraevangheliarul (The Four Gospels), Lucrul apostolesc (The Acts of Apostles) and Psaltirea (Psalms). Until the end of the 16th century, there had been published the Palia de la Orăștie (1582), which contains the first OT books translated into the Romanian language and preserved until today. These are the books of Genesis and Exodus. The main characteristic of all Romanian translations in the 16th century is that they were initiated in Transylvania by protestant ecclesiastic and government leaders in order to convert the Romanian orthodox population to Protestantism.
