Abstract

This article discusses the development of NT textual criticism from the 16th century all through the 18th century. This is the period that stretches from the beginnings of this discipline right to the early stages of its maturity. In this article it is shown that the 16 century is the time of the first printing of a Greek NT, while the 17th century is the time of the establishment of what is known as Textus Receptus as the Greek Testament. The same century however shows evidences of distrust in the perfection of Textus Receptus. The 18th century reveals definite progress in the three areas of scientific enquiry, namely, manuscripts discovery, manuscripts description and manuscripts classification.
